Understanding your payment fee

Inside a blended rate

A blended rate brings the underlying costs of accepting a card payment together into a processing price. Tiquo uses Stripe to process payments. The components below explain how card processing costs arise.

01

Interchange — the card issuer’s share

For networks such as Visa and Mastercard, interchange is generally paid by the acquiring bank to the customer’s card issuer. The applicable category can depend on the card product, issuing country and transaction type.

02

Scheme fees — the card network’s charges

These cover use of the payment network and its services. They are distinct from interchange and can include transaction, authorisation, cross-border and other network assessments.

03

Acquiring and processing — handling the payment

The payment provider’s charges cover the infrastructure and services used to authorise, process and settle a payment. The published fee breakdown and applicable Tiquo terms explain how provider and platform charges are included or billed.

One rate, several underlying costs

These are components of a blended processing price, not amounts to add to the starting rate. Use the published fee schedule together with the applicable Tiquo terms to determine the charge for each payment and any separate fees.

UK & EU consumer interchange

General consumer interchange caps · UK domestic and eligible intra-EU payments
NetworkConsumer debitConsumer credit
VisaUp to 0.2%Up to 0.3%
MastercardUp to 0.2%Up to 0.3%

The general caps shown above are the same for both regions. UK rules cover eligible domestic transactions where the merchant, acquirer and issuer are in the UK. EU rules cover eligible transactions within the EU where both payment service providers are in the EU, including payments between EU countries. National rules can provide lower caps or alternative domestic debit fee structures. An EU-issued card used at a UK merchant is not an intra-EU payment. These figures are interchange caps, not commercial-card rates, Amex rates or total blended processing fees.

US domestic interchange

Visa & Mastercard · Underlying interchange · Fixed amounts in US dollars
Card categoryInterchange fee
Regulated debitUp to 0.05% + US$0.21An additional US$0.01 fraud-prevention adjustment applies when eligible. These fixed amounts stay in US dollars regardless of your selected display currency.
Exempt debitVaries by network and programmeThe regulated debit cap does not apply. Use the applicable Visa or Mastercard schedule.
Consumer creditVaries by card and transaction categoryNo single US consumer-credit interchange rate. Card product, merchant category and payment channel affect the applicable network rate.

Regulation II covers eligible US debit transactions. Issuers with less than $10 billion in assets, including affiliates, are generally exempt from its interchange cap; certain prepaid and government-program transactions are also exempt. Credit cards are outside this debit cap. These are underlying interchange costs, not total processing fees or rates for US-issued cards used at UK or EU merchants.

Launch & Scale fee breakdown

Tiquo plan fees vary by market; underlying interchange follows the regional schedules above. Fixed amounts are shown in GBP using the fixed conversion rates noted above. Where a row shows a percentage plus a fixed amount, both apply to the relevant activity under the published pricing and applicable Tiquo terms.

Read the components alongside your blended rate

These rows are not a second total to add to the headline rate. The published fee schedule and applicable Tiquo terms identify which components are included in blended pricing, which services are optional and which are billed separately. No universal rate for a particular card is implied by adding every row.

What affects card costs

A card logo alone does not identify the cost of a transaction. These are the details to check when reviewing a card category or your payment mix.

Consumer debit and credit

Debit and credit are different card products, with their own interchange categories. Consumer-card rules do not automatically extend to commercial cards.

Premium, business and corporate cards

Commercial products and some other card categories can carry different underlying costs. Use the network’s actual classification; “premium” is not a consistent definition across providers.

Domestic and international cards

The location of the issuer relative to the merchant and acquirer determines which regional or cross-border rules apply. Use the UK and EU or US interchange guidance above for the transaction’s market.

Online and in-person payments

Card-present and card-not-present transactions can fall into different categories. How the card is captured and authenticated can also matter.

Payment and settlement currency

Currency conversion is a separate consideration from a card’s issuing country. An international card does not, by itself, mean the payment needs to be converted.

For card-funded wallets, check the underlying card and payment channel.

Check with the card network

For a specific card product, start with the network’s official information. Visa and Mastercard publish interchange schedules; Amex provides guidance on its merchant acceptance fees.

Visa

Find Visa’s published interchange schedules by country and transaction region. Check the relevant card product and payment category.

Visa interchange guidance

Mastercard

Use Mastercard’s interchange hub for country schedules and cross-border categories. Consumer and commercial products can have different underlying costs.

Mastercard interchange guidance

American Express

Amex has a different acceptance model. Its merchant guidance explains processing fees; Visa and Mastercard interchange tables do not describe Amex pricing.

Amex merchant fee guidance
Network information is only part of the picture

A published interchange table is not a total merchant processing fee. Amex’s direct merchant terms may also differ from a processor’s terms. These resources help explain underlying costs; the published Tiquo fees and applicable terms determine what you pay.

To look up a particular card

  1. Identify the card network, issuing country and product category, including whether it is a consumer or commercial card.
  2. Check the relevant network resource for the transaction’s region and payment channel. Use the current schedule and its qualification rules.
  3. Match that information to the published Tiquo fee breakdown and applicable terms. Ask our team to confirm any category that is unclear before calculating a fee.
